Kiwi Landscapes: Beach Sentinals

This image shows one of the unique details of the New Zealand landscape. There are many aspects of New Zealand that are distinctive to this island country. It can be a magical place, both serene and sublimely foreign at the same time. Its unique elements are a common source of artistic inspiration and this image is born of that spirit.

These ancient remnants of trees line a beach; the afternoon water line was approximately 10 feet to the right of the image frame. The spacing and linearity of these aged roots makes me wonder if they were an early attempt at erosion control. Or maybe the local natives liked having shade on their beach? Regardless, the steadfast, water-beaten, and sun-bleached wood will surely stand as sentinels for years to come.
